With Captain America: Civil War set to kick off Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Variety is reporting that the latest MCU blockbuster is tracking a domestic opening of $175 million, with some analysts claiming it could go close to $200 million.
“It’s tough to predict any movie getting above $200 million, but this one has a shot,” states Eric Handler, an analyst with MKM Partners. “They have two weeks of good buzz to build on and the marketing machine behind this is going to be huge.”
Should Civil War break $200 million, it would become only the fourth movie in history to do so after Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million) and The Avengers ($207.4 million).
A $175 million haul would also give it the biggest domestic opening of the year, overtaking superhero rivals Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million) and Deadpool ($132.4 million).
