Carrie Fisher says the Slave Leia Star Wars controversy is “stupid”

December 4, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back in July, a father complained that his local Target store was selling an action figure of Princess Leia in her slave outfit from Return of the Jedi, which was then followed by rumours that Disney plans on retiring ‘Slave Leia’ from all upcoming Star Wars products and merchandise.

Speaking about the ‘controversy’ ahead of the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Princess Leia herself Carrie Fisher has said that she finds the whole thing “stupid”.

“I think it’s stupid,” Fisher tells The Wall Street Journal. “The father who flipped out about it, “What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?” Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.”

Fisher also responded to a question about whether she had any doubts about returning to the character for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, stating that: “I’ve been this character for 40 years, why would I not? Because I’m going to be associated with Princess Leia more? There is no ‘more.’ And I’m a female working in show business, where, if you’re famous, you have a career until you’re 45, maybe. Maybe. And that’s about 15 people.”
