CBS explains why it scheduled Supergirl against Gotham

August 12, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back in June, CBS announced the premiere date for Supergirl, making the somewhat surprising decision to air in it direct competition with Fox’s own DC series Gotham on Monday nights.

Speaking to IGN during the Television Critics Association summer press tour, CBS chairman Nina Tassler took a moment to explain the reason behind the scheduling:

“I think that they’re different audiences. I think Supergirl has a much bigger, broader audience. It’s more family entertainment. And they look different, they feel different.”

While it may be true that Supergirl has more appeal for family audiences, the first season of Gotham pulled in some impressive ratings for Fox, and you’d have to imagine the direct competition is going to cut into the ratings for both shows.

Which series will you be prioritising?

Gotham season two is set to get underway on Monday, September 21st, while Supergirl is set to premiere on October 26th.
