CBS orders TV reboot of S.W.A.T., Justin Lin to direct

February 5, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Variety is reporting that CBS has picked up a pilot for a reboot of the classic 70s TV series S.W.A.T., with Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond) set to direct the pilot from a script by Aaron Thomas (Friday Night Lights). Lin and Thomas will also executive produce alongside Shawn Ryan, Marney Hochman, Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty and Danielle Woodrow.

The reboot “follows a locally born and bred S.W.A.T. lieutenant who is torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he’s tasked to run a highly-trained unit that is the last stop for solving crimes in Los Angeles.”

The original S.W.A.T. ran for two seasons on ABC between 1975 and 1976, and followed a team of Special Weapons and Tactics operatives working in California. It was adapted for the big screen in 2003 with a feature film starring Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, LL Cool J, Michelle Rodriguez and Jeremy Renner, which also spawned a direct-to-video sequel entitled S.W.A.T.: Firefight in 2011.
