Centipede and Missile Command are the latest video games to be adapted for the big screen

May 13, 2016 by Luke Owen

As we’ve been talking about on the Flickering Myth Podcast for the last few weeks, with four movies being released this year based on video game movies it will only take one of them to be successful to create an influx of adaptations. Well, even though Ratchet & Clank didn’t do all that well at the box office and The Angry Birds Movie, Warcaft and Assassin’s Creed aren’t out yet, we’re starting to see more video game movie news trickle through.

The latest is that production company Emmett/Furla/Oasis have inked a deal with Atari to make big screen versions of their classic 2600 games Centipede and Missile Command. Randell Emmett and George Furla are attached to produce, but no writers or directors have been hired.

Missile Command was released in 1980 and brought to the Atari 2600 a year later and is considered one of the greatest arcade games ever released. Centipede was hit the arcades in 1980 but was released in 1982 for the Atari 2600. Those who saw last year’s Pixels will remember the scene where Adam Sandler and Josh Gad chase down a Centipede as it invades London.

This news joins the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed as well as the news of new writers joining Borderlands and a tease of development on the Just Cause movie.

Are you excited for movies based on Centipede and Missile Command? Let us know in the comments below.
