Charlie Cox says Daredevil thinks about God quite differently in season 3

October 3, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Charlie Cox, the star of Daredevil, says that the vigilante holds a slightly different attitude towards God in season three.

Matt Murdock, otherwise known as Daredevil, is a religious man, a faithful Catholic who has been seen going to confessional in seasons one and two of the Netflix show. Matt is clearly a man of God, even though his actions don’t exactly align with his faith.

Matt’s view of God is going to change slightly in season three, however, as Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, told Screen Rant that while Matt hasn’t lost his faith, he is starting to think of God differently:

“I think that he now, he still believes in God, but he now believes in a punishing God. He sees God as, at times, quite cynical and almost vindictive and hopefully he’ll come back from that, but early on, at least, he’s that angry and he feels that let down and if you’re someone who believes he was given this gift in order to help and then that’s taken away but you’re still alive, it throws everything into question. And then the other attitude that has changed a bit is that I think Matt goes from believing that he was Matt Murdock with this alter-ego of Daredevil to believing that he’s Daredevil with a lie of Matt Murdock. There’s a very subtle shift, but mentally it does some interesting things. It makes him a little bit more reckless, which is quite fun. He’s less concerned with being caught. There’s scenes where I feel like there’s an enjoyment to the recklessness of it all.”

It certainly sounds like Daredevil season three is going to delve into some fascinating territory. It will be interesting to see if Matt will be able to get out of this dark place in the upcoming season and return to a more healthy relationship with God.

Season three of Daredevil sees Charlie Cox (Matt Murdoch/Daredevil), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin) all returning to the cast alongside new additions Joanne Whalley (Wolf Hall) as Sister Maggie and Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie), potentially as the villain Bullseye. It is set to arrive on Netflix on October 19th.
