Chris Pine admits that he doesn’t know anything about Star Trek 4

March 1, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

As Chris Pine prepares to headline a brand new franchise with Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, he has been reflecting upon his stint on the bridge of Starship Enterprise, and in the process admitting that he doesn’t know anything about the current state of Star Trek 4.

With thrusters in reverse on J.J. Abrams Kelvin timeline Trek since the perceived failure of the excellent Star Trek: Beyond ($343 million at the worldwide box-office), there have been enough stories of further adventures to fill a Captain’s Log.

There was the oft-discussed Tarantino-Trek, a fourth outing which would bring back Chris Hemsworth as Kirk’s father George, and an actively in-development sequel to be helmed by WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman, before he beamed off the Paramount lot to make Marvel’s Fantastic 4, and the film was subsequently removed from the release calendar.

Who better then to provide some clarity on the status of Star Trek 4 than Captain James T. Kirk himself, Chris Pine, who was speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about everything from the Don’t Worry Darling press-circus, to whether he’d like to saddle up and appear in Yellowstone.

When the subject turned to Trek, Pine responded “I don’t know anything,” before elaborating that “In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors.”

When pressed on the lack of certainty surrounding the role Pine said “I would say it’s frustrating. It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created—I just can’t do it. I don’t have the energy.”

Pine also mentioned the passing of Anton Yelchin, who played Lieutenant Pavel Chekov so wonderfully in J.J. Abrams rebooted world, as a factor in how he feels about the franchise moving forward. He added “After the last one came out and didn’t do the $1 billion that everybody wanted it to do, and then Anton passed away, I don’t know, it just seemed….” before he tailed off saying “feels like it’s cursed.”
