Citadel season 2 delayed with future spin-offs on hold amid production troubles

March 31, 2025 by Ricky Church

Though Amazon’s spy series Citadel premiered in 2023, it looks like audiences will have to wait even longer for the second season to arrive as The Hollywood Reporter revealed Amazon MGM has delayed it and put any further spin-offs on hold amid more production problems.

Developed by the Russo Brothers, Citadel followed a top secret agency that came under attack from a global terrorist organization. After the two surviving members had their memories wiped and went into hiding, they are discovered and must reunite and gain their memories back in order to uncover a plot that could threaten the world.

The first season, which starred Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the lead roles, suffered from several issues during production that included reshoots, competing cuts of episodes and crew troubles. The issues utimately ballooned the cost of Citadel‘s already high budget by pushing it past the $200 million mark, making it the second most expensive TV series after Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Despite those issues, Amazon still went ahead ordering a second season even before the first premiered as well as the idea of creating spin-offs for specific countries around the world. Last year saw the premiere of Italy’s Citadel: Diana and India’s Citadel: Honey Bunny, taking place within the Citadel universe and focusing on the international agents with each series made by a cast and crew native to their countries.

The series is once again suffering from production problems as THR reports Amazon is unhappy with what they’ve seen of the second season so far after it wrapped production last November. This could lead to further reshoots, but for now Amazon has simply delayed the second season, which was expected to begin this fall, to Spring 2026. Development on more spin-offs have also been stopped until the second season has aired if not indefinitely, putting the future of the series up in the air.
