Clive Barker returns to the Hellraiser franchise for upcoming HBO series

October 31, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Earlier in the year, HBO announced a new version of the horror series Hellraiser was in development, with David Gordon Green (Halloween) directing the pilot and several other episodes, and Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat) writing alongside Mark Verheiden (Swamp Thing). And now we can add one more name to the mix, and it’s the man behind the original idea, Clive Barker!

Producer Dan Farah was reportedly instrumental in getting Barker on board as an executive producer, noting to Deadline that, “Hellraiser started with Clive’s imagination, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him on board.”

Barker opened up about the return stating that he’s “delighted the Hellraiser mythology is seeing a new life. It’s time the stories went back to their roots. I’m eager to bring to a new audience the most powerful and ancient elements of horror: the darkest evil invading our human lives and how we must find in ourselves the power to resist it.”

Barker, who wrote the original story, wrote and directed the first film, hasn’t returned to the Hellraiser franchise since the 1996 entry Hellraiser: Bloodline. This will also mark the first television series for the long-running horror franchise.
