Comic Book Review – Bill and Ted Go to Hell #3

April 28, 2016 by Emma Withington

Emma Withington reviews Bill & Ted Go to Hell #3…

‘Bill & Ted will have to team up with Satan to take down the Easter Bunny and his master-who are heading straight for the holy of all holies: Heaven! It’s time for Joan of Arc to live up to her calling and kick some evil butt!’

Previously in Hell…

Death has been ‘deathnapped’ and taken to Hell, however, it’s not Satan behind this heinous act but Napoleon Bonaparte – the new Lord of Hell and its biggest ever water park, while Satan lay in chains. His aim? To invade and conquer Heaven. Death holds the secret to entering Heaven and is being held captive until he reveals this knowledge. Bill and Ted gather a host of familiar faces to go to Hell and get their bass player back…

Bill, Ted, and the gang end up in the infamous Hell rooms, so Death, in order to save his friends (but mainly his inability to resist a game) is persuaded to make a deal with Napoleon to play chess – if Napoleon wins he gets the information he desires. Death, of course, loses and is obliged to uphold the deal. Now Napoleon is ‘riding a spillway to heaven’ and he must be stopped.

Bill & Ted Go to Hell #3 is the penultimate issue in this four part miniseries. Napoleon is off to Heaven and Death is no longer able to transport himself there. The gang turn to their last resort – Satan himself. They must ‘Run with the Devil, just like Van Halen’, to reach Heaven. It’s time for a guided tour of purgatory, courtesy of one of Satan’s most trusted lieutenants: Genghis Khan.

Boom! comics are great at translating popular screen characters into comic book form and are unfailingly faithful to the source material; tailor made by fans for the fans. Sleepy Hollow was an excellent accompanying comic book to its TV series and after Boom! revived Bill and Ted last year with Bill and Ted’s Most Triumphant Return – which continued the storyline from Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey – I had no doubt that Bill and Ted Go to Hell #3 would be an enjoyable experience, addled with welcome nostalgia and adds an entirely new adventure to the franchise.

As someone who grew up with the Bill and Ted movies, the pleasingly 90’s art style and well scripted dialogue presented in Bill and Ted Go to Hell #3 takes you back into the nonsensical, but bodacious world of the endearingly dumb but good hearted duo, leaving any fan satisfied.

Bill and Ted Go to Hell #3 ‘To be totally concluded’ in the next issue, until then – be excellent to each other!

Rating: 8/10
