Comic Book Review – Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #2

July 9, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency #2…

Holistic Detective Dirk seeks the connection between the murderous Copycat Killers and reincarnated Egyptian ghouls while trying to survive a frantic party-bus across his new haunt of San Diego…

After the firework of the first issue [read our review here] Chris Ryall has rather sensibly brought the pace of the series down in this second issue so he can begin to concentrate on the individual links of this chain of interconnectedness.  Though I’m unsure if “sensibly” can be applied to ad hoc party buses and reanimated mummies who are being investigated by a CIA officer who was also once the former lover of the God Thor?

As we left Dirk last issue we had ancient mummies rising from their tombs in San Diego museum, a happily married couple of serial killers arriving in town to emulate other infamous serial killers, tramps with golden mobile phones and Dirk bursting into a detective themed tea shop declaring this to be his new base of operations. If you missed all of this don’t fret as you are quickly brought up to speed rapidly in the opening pages.  It’s from this we carry on as Dirk travels across San Diego rolling out facts that exist only in his head to his new assistant – by association – Tonya, and also the tourists who mistakenly believe these facts to be the truth and latch on to Dirks one man tour of the city.  It’s on these travels Dirk meets up with the newly reanimated Ancient Egyptians, who join the growing throng of tourists under the belief there may be something more to Dirk as one of his facts seems to be correct.   During all of this a CIA officer – also former paramour to the God Thor – Kate Schechter arrives at the museum to investigate the case of the disappearing Mummies.

Chris Ryall is truly on a roll with Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency; he’s captured the spirit and the pace of the books already by issue #2 and it’s already a fantastic extension to the lore of Dirk Gently. That along with the good-looking, energetic artwork from Tony Atkins this comic book series is brilliantly enjoyable to an aging Douglas Adams fan like myself.

The mystery is carefully unwrapping and I am excited in seeing the final gift.  Today go out and buy this comic.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
