Comic Book Review – Star Trek: Manifest Destiny #4

June 8, 2016 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek: Manifest Destiny #4…

The 50th Anniversary Celebration of the STAR TREK franchise continues in this special event mini-series! The fate of two civilizations comes down to the ultimate face-off between Captain Kirk and the Klingons!

As the bulkhead door closes on Star Trek: Manifest Destiny, the comic to celebrate the 50th Anniversary on Star Trek, we can be reassured in the knowledge that Mike Johnson and Ryan Parrott have brought back the Klingons.  Not in a comedy sidekick way either – we’re talking planet conquering, slave-taking, enemy slaying Klingons.  Mike and Ryan have brought the Klingons back!

Kirk and the surviving members of the crew are locked in the Brig, so the Klingon Commander Sho’tokh’s attention is turned to the incursion from his own crew as the female Commander called Divash has now begun her attack upon the Enterprise to usurp her commander.

With objections from McCoy as volleys are being fired from the Klingon vessel at the Enterprise, they enlist the help of Sulu to reveal sensitive tactical data, on the Federation vessel, to help cripple it.  Whilst this is going on unbeknownst to Sho’tokh, Spock is also in the process of releasing the Enterprise crew to retake their ship.

Firstly an admission on my part, at no point did I pick up on Sho’tokh was technically an Albino Klingon!?  During the opening scenes when his rise through hate is revealed it’s made plainly obvious and I felt slightly dim-witted for not noticing this; the Gods only know why I didn’t.

One thing that has been strong throughout Star Trek: Manifest Destiny, is the ferocity of the Klingons but along with this – which Divash spoke of – was their honour, which Sho’tokh due to his “nurture” had quickly learned to live without.  However it’s here in the final issue, though it was hinted at in the past issues, that his ways cannot be tolerated anymore and we see what Klingons do when they see their own honour being corrupted by proxy.

Yes, we didn’t get a movie tie-in for Star Trek Beyond this year, however after this storming, vicious and beautifully brutal “Welcome home Klingons!” treat instead, I’m more than happy that Mike Johnson, Ryan Parrott and Angel Hernandez all sat down together to make something this fantastic.

“Starfleet we are back!”, roared the Klingons and the galaxy trembled.

Rating: 10/10
