Conan the Barbarian TV series in early development at Netflix

October 1, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Conan the Barbarian is set to make a comeback to the screen as Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action TV series as part of a deal between the streaming service and Conan Properties International.

According to Deadline, there are no details regarding the project as the series is in early development with a search currently underway for a writer/showrunner to pen the Conan adaptation and a director to helm the project.

The project will come from Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler’s Pathfinder Media, who will also serve as executive producers, and is set to be the first of many in a deal that gives the streaming service exclusive access to more than 50 novels by creator Robert E. Howard to develop into TV series and films, both live-action and animated.

The character was most famously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1982 feature Conan the Barbarian as well as the 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer. The latest iteration of the character on the big screen came in 2011’s Conan the Barbarian which starred Jason Momoa as the titular hero.

Following Schwarzenegger’s iteration of the character, Conan was developed into two animated TV shows including Conan the Adventurer and the spinoff Conan and the Young Warriors which ran from 1992-94. This was followed by the short-lived live-action Conan the Adventurer series in 1997.
