Given that it’s comfortably become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time – and the first and only one to ever cross a billion at the box office – it goes without saying that it’s only a matter of time before Warner Bros. announced a sequel to the Joaquin Phoenix-headlined Joker movie. However, it seems a new report stating that Joker 2 is officially in the works may well be a little premature at this point…
Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter ran a story claiming that Todd Phillips met with Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich last month, pitching an idea to develop a series of DC origin stories, reimagined in a similar fashion to that of Joker. Emmerich is said to have balked at the idea, but “emerged from the meeting with the rights to at least one other DC story”, along with a sequel to Joker. The report went on to state that Phillips is in talks to direct Joker 2, as well as co-writing the screenplay once again with Scott Silver.
Fellow trade Deadline then posted its own report, calling THR’s story “great click back” and stating that no such meeting took place between Phillips and Emmerich, and that the director is not interesting in overseeing any other DC character films. Furthermore, Deadline’s sources claim that there are no deals in place for Joker 2, and that neither Phillips or Silver are yet to open any kind of negotiations with Warner Bros. and DC.
