Constance Wu to star in dramedy Goodbye, Vitamin

Variety has reported Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians) has been cast in Universal Picture’s upcoming dramedy Goodbye, Vitamin. The film is an adaptation of Rachel Khong’s novel of the same name.

Goodbye, Vitamin sees Wu as Ruth Young, who discovers that her father, a renowned history professor, has lost his job after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She decides to return home and work with her father’s former student to stage a fake class so he can continue to teach.

Khong won a lot of recognition and praise for her novel, most notably winning the California Book Award for First Action and being named Book of the Year by NPR and Oprah Magazine. The official synopsis for the book is:

Freshly disengaged from her fiancé and feeling that life has not turned out quite the way she planned, Ruth quits her job, leaves town and arrives at her parents’ home to find that situation more complicated than she’d realized. Her father, a prominent history professor, is losing his memory and is only erratically lucid. Ruth’s mother, meanwhile, is lucidly erratic. But as Ruth’s father’s condition intensifies, the comedy in her situation takes hold, gently transforming her all her grief.

Jennifer Yee McDevit (Pittsburgh Passion) will write the screenplay while Dylan Clark produces through his Dylan Clark Productions banner with Wu executive producing as well. A director has not yet been chosen.
