A24’s The Backrooms film has nailed some impressive actors as the sci-fi horror reportedly has Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cristin Milioti in talks to join the movie from filmmaker Kane Parsons.
Little is known about the projects or the roles for either actor. It has yet to be confirmed, but the story comes from The InSneider’s Jeff Sneider.
Parsons will direct from a script by Roberto Patino. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine will produce 21 Laps. James Wan and Michael Clear will also produce Atomic Monster.
The Backrooms is a creepypasta that has evolved into an expansive horror mythos across the internet. It describes a liminal, otherworldly space in which people can accidentally “noclip” into” usual”y through glitches or anomalies, like a wrong turn in a building or falling through a floor. The story has inspired games, short films (notably by Kane Pixels on YouTube), ARGs (alternate reality games), and community fiction. The Hulu horror series American Horror Story also recently did an episode focused on backrooms.
Expect a specific look and aesthetic from the project, as the original description, from a 2019 4chan post, depicts the backrooms with moist, musty yellow carpet, buzzing fluorescent lights, and filled with total disorientation and a lack of windows or exits.
