Martin Carr reviews the sixth episode of Daredevil season 3…
Camerawork and sound design continue playing a major part in defining season three of this Marvel-Netflix joint venture. Spiralling psychological states, whispered reminiscences and a sense of claustrophobia all feed into this mid-way point. With factions branching off which see Foggy and Karen in one corner, Fisk and his entourage in another while Murdoch hovers between the two, stakes have never been higher. Law enforcement and their control of the situation is quickly unravelling as Kingpin carries through on his threats without once flexing a considerable muscle.
D’Onofrio and Bethel are fast becoming the double act to watch performance wise amongst this legion of good work. Not only is the former showing all that can be achieved through sustained stillness within a scene, but his opposite number subtly displays all the mannerisms of a man on the edge without once broaching caricature. From eventual psychological disintegration through to reinvention Poindexter and his destiny are shaped artfully by measured moments and pivotal turning points. An acting masterstroke on this occasion happens as Fisk reveals private moments shared with few to illustrate their similarities and his vulnerability, which in turn cements their allegiance. Something which has proven instrumental on countless occasions as this master manipulator sheds his animalistic exterior exposing symptoms, reasons and choices behind for his lack of humanity.
Elsewhere Murdock is revealed as an isolationist with defence mechanisms several feet thick locked into a world where he chooses blindness and self-sufficiency over friendship. Perpetually blaming himself and the non-existence of God for that place in this world, advised only by the maternal figure of Sister Maggie. This is the episode where Karen and Maggie finally meet and these home truths are passed on in quiet moments of solitude before a storm begin to gather. With the strength of a fully mobilised FBI, a far reaching criminal network and trust in short supply, this Daredevil has never been backed further into a corner. As someone comes forward willing to offer Murdock back the opportunity for a normal life something lurks in the darkness posed to rob him blind.
From the ashes of Poindexter comes an incarnation with the power of right on his side. A force of nature devoid of scruples, an individual of single minded savagery and unrelenting devotion to mentor and mission alike. Like a charred and blackened phoenix breaking forth from the eggshell husk of a lost soul, he comes from darkness to meter out punishment and retribution against an enemy running on empty. Remorse is something for others to feel as this Daredevil represents the ghost of a Christmas future remade in his image.
