Daredevil season 3 will be more “grounded” and a “traditional crime thriller”

October 3, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Season 3 of Daredevil will move away from its mythological aspects and return to being more a grounded crime thriller.

In its past two seasons, there have been some mythological components, mostly involving the Hand, permeating Daredevil, especially in season two.

Season three of the show, however, will more closely resemble season one according to Charlie Cox, and return to being more grounded and a tale of crime in a world not much unlike our own.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Cox described how he deals with the contrasting fantastical and grounded elements of the show:

“I really struggle with that. I really struggled with that question. … What eventually helped me was going back to the comic books and remembering that I can still read and enjoy the Daredevil books that have none of the mythological stuff in it even having read the ones that do have it in it. Over the years, there’s been writers and illustrators that have really delved deep into the Hand and that mythological element and bringing people back from the dead, and then there’s the Frank Millers who did very little of that and it was very grounded and real. My preference is the stuff that doesn’t have as much mythology. … We’re now back in a world that feels grounded and real, and those things happened, but in the same way in the first season it was all very grounded and real but we still lived a world where Iron Man exists, we still lived in a world where Thor exists and make fun Easter egg references to them. But in the nature of this moment in this show, we’re not dealing with that. That’s what we’re doing in season 3, we’re back in a much more traditional crime thriller environment.”

Are you excited by the prospect of Daredevil returning to a more grounded state of affairs for season three? The tussle between Matt and Wilson Fisk in season one was certainly the most celebrated aspect of the show to date, so perhaps this will be a sign of great things to come for the new season.

Season three of Daredevil sees Charlie Cox (Matt Murdoch/Daredevil), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin) all returning to the cast alongside new additions Joanne Whalley (Wolf Hall) as Sister Maggie and Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie), potentially as the villain Bullseye. It is set to arrive on Netflix on October 19th.
