David Fincher thinks that the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes it challenging for directors to tell complex tales

October 16, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Seven, and Fight Club director David Fincher has some criticism for the current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During an interview with Youtuber Yellow King Film Boy, while talking about his excellent new Netflix series Mindhunter, the conversation swerved to Marvel Studios. As it turns out, Fincher takes some issue with the often light-hearted, and less-risky storytelling of Marvel’s ongoing shared universe:

“Look, there’s a very large talent pool of people who don’t feel there’s much for them in terms of sustenance working for Marvel. And I think that if we can make a playground for them that is thoughtful, adult, interesting, complex, challenging stories and figure out ways to pull them into it, there’s a chance at something that isn’t lassoed and hogtied by three acts. And there’s something else that doesn’t have to be 22-minute half hour or have a cliffhanger. I think it is an exciting time.”

David Fincher is nothing if not complex. The man has made some of the most arresting films of the last twenty years, after all. Does he have a point about Marvel? The plotlines really do follow a clear formula, but many of them have been very creative; the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok being a clear example of Marvel deviating from its typical course. One thing is for sure: Fincher is absolutely, 100% not suited for a Marvel movie. Though, perhaps he’d make a better DC guy? With DC Films desire to make more standalone films, perhaps he would find it more satisfying?
