Jessie Robertson reviews the fifteenth episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 2…
“My mom’s condiment game is on point!” Easily the funniest and most ridiculous line of Legends this season and that’s saying something
Full disclosure: I totally thought this was the finale and was pretty hooked from start to finish. Legends can sometimes be overwrought with the time period they are in, or fitting too much action/plot points to really focus on character, or just being over the top goofy with the time changes. Last year’s future Star City episode sticks out as something I really thought had potential and ended up being “just okay”. Tonight’s time warp was a whole lot of damn fun. Every single character had a unique, fun arc (including the Legion) and I thought there was some really clever writing going on. From Jax being Stein’s overbearing boss, to Sara and Amaya being deadly sex kitten assassins to Nate being a mulleted conspiracy theorist, just awesome roles.
The writing was also on point tonight using Mick as a focal point once again; the fabric of reality was compromised because of him and it’s only fair it should rest on his shoulders. But, I like how they don’t just redeem Mick, and completely make him a noble guy, because he’s obviously not. He’s a guy who likes the simple things in life: drinking, eating and stealing. Morals don’t really , nor have they ever played into it. He’s back with his partner, Snart, enjoying the good life but where’s the chases? Where’s the danger? For Snart, just being on top, and being smarter than everyone else is enough; for Mick, stealing and being chased for what you stole was one of those things. I”d argue Mick has taken on a lot of those “villains ethics” that Geoff Johns so famously attached to Snart’s characters in the DC comics world as Snart has completely abandoned them here. So, Mick saves Nate and tells him he’s right about the reality cracks and decides to do something about them.
Once Sara is zapped with Ray’s gun that somehow pulls people’s minds back into reality, she goes back to the Legion’s HQ to infiltrate; but Dahrk, while looking at his impressive trophy case of hero’s masks, gets her goad by talking about killing Laurel. It’s a slimy and evil speech and Sara can’t stand it. Dahrk with his powers was one of the most threatening villains in the Arrow-verse but they played very little role here, probably it’s too much to have that going on with everything else. As the team gets back together, there’s one piece missing: Rip. He’s inexplicably still on the ship with no power so what has he turned his attention to? Baking cakes! His scenes are some of the best of the episode and ever since their real life kiss, I love the Rip-Gideon relationship. In fact, Arthur Darvill (who plays Rip) has had some great side-parts as Rip this season and really showed some great acting talent.
The climax (being I thought it was the finale) was really pretty intense, with Amaya about to use the spear and getting frozen to death and broken into a million pieces by Snart, which just shuts Mick down, then ending with Thawne basically winning. Wow. Really, really fun episode with big stakes and great “elseworlds” Moments.
9/10- ready for next week’s finale as Rip jump starts the model ship Waverider!
Other Notes:
– Even the most ardent Felicity haters out there had to dig her costume in this alternate reality.
– Who knew Nate’s mom’s basement and her sandwiches would be one of the best segments in this year’s season.
