Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy in talks for Avengers 5, rumored to have 60+ heroes

June 5, 2024 by EJ Moreno

If you want a jam-packed movie with your favorite (or least favorite) superheroes, it looks like the next big Avengers movie is for you.

With the project’s development beginning to take shape, Marvel Studios is looking for a captain for this ship, and they may have found one with director Shawn Levy.

Deadline reports that the studio has courted the filmmaker for a potential director’s gig on Avengers 5. Per the story, “Levy has been given the latest script by Michael Waldron” but has not given the studio his response yet.

If you aren’t totally familiar with Shawn Levy’s name, he is more than familiar with Marvel. He’s the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, which is shaping up to be a multiverse story and a trip down memory lane for the Fox/Marvel era. His other credits include the Night at the Museum films, Real Steel, Free Guy and The Adam Project, and he is also an executive producer and director on Stranger Things.

Those skills will be needed, as the rumors for Avengers 5 are that the film will likely feature ” 60 MCU characters who could reprise their roles, including everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, and Karen Gillian.”

The report from Deadline also notes that these roles would “have equal footing, making it more of an ensemble feature” and less of a cameo-filled spectacle. This film could also be the perfect place for Robert Downey Jr. to make his Iron Man comeback, as he’s been talking about it quite a bit recently.

With Jonathan Majors’ Kang not returning for the once-titled Kang Dynasty (which previously had Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ring’s Destin Daniel Cretton attached), there’s no report on who will be the villain nor what this fifth Avengers film will focus on. Until we hear more, you can check out the trailer for Shawn Levy’s Marvel debut Deadpool & Wolverine below…

Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Shawn Levy (Free Guy) and stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman alongside Fox/Marvel veterans Jennifer Garner (Elektra), Stefan Kapacic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), Lewis Tan (Shatterstar), Rob Delaney (Peter) and Aaron Stanford (Pyro), with new additions including Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) as Paradox and Emma Corrin (The Crown) as Cassandra Nova.

Deadpool & Wolverine is set for release on July 26th.
