Director Adam Wingard on how Godzilla vs. Kong inspired his ThunderCats movie

April 3, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Fans began buzzing the moment when Adam Wingard became the director of the upcoming ThunderCats film, but it seems no one is more excited bout this than the man himself. In a recent interview with Uproxx, Wingard opens up about being “obsessed” with the 80s cartoon and when exactly he felt he could tackle this project.

“I would say during the late phases of the Godzilla vs. Kong post – when I started getting shots in from the Hollow Earth scene – I started looking at it and, honestly, this is how it started,” Wingard explains. “It was literally I was looking at shots of Hollow Earth, and I thought, god, this is exactly what a ThunderCats movie should look like. And then I thought, wait a minute, I could make the ThunderCats movie! And it’s like, this is what it should be. And up until now, I kept hearing that there was always this kind of peripheral, maybe Hollywood’s going to do a live-action ThunderCats.”

Though it isn’t going to be exactly a “live-action” film, Wingard went on to open up about why using CGI and animation to bring the characters to life will work out for the best.

“Anytime I picture the ThunderCats [in] live-action, it’s basically just putting makeup on people; it just looks ridiculous. It just doesn’t seem righ. Because everybody, always, they think, oh, the ThunderCats, they have to look like cats. But if you really look at the ThunderCats, it’s not like they’re conventionally looking like a cross between cats and humans; they’re different. They’re ThunderCats. They’re bigger than that and stranger than that.”

It seems like we might be able to avoid another Cats-like disaster with Adam Wingard helming this Thundercats project. What are your thoughts? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Legends collide in “Godzilla vs. Kong” as these mythic adversaries meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Kong and his protectors undertake a perilous journey to find his true home, and with them is Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond. But they unexpectedly find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. The epic clash between the two titans—instigated by unseen forces—is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep within the core of the Earth.

Godzilla vs. Kong is directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, Blair Witch) and sees Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline) and Ziyi Zhang (The Cloverfield Paradox) reprising their roles from Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while new additions to the MonsterVerse include Alexander Skarsgard (Big Little Lies), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Rebecca Hall (Holmes and Watson), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Shun Oguri (Crows Zero), Lance Reddick (The Wire) and Kaylee Hottle.
