Director Destin Daniel Cretton exits Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

November 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Marvel has a Kang problem, but not how you think, as Deadline is reporting Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has lost its director, with Destin Daniel Cretton exiting the project.

It seems like Marvel will keep the filmmaker on board with future MCU projects. Cretton is busy on Wonder Man, the Marvel Studios/Disney+ series, which is set to begin production again after Thanksgiving. Wonder Man will now fall under the new Marvel Spotlight series banner, which puts it outside the regular MCU storyline.

Soon after that, Cretton will reportedly begin work on Shang-Chi 2, having served as director on the first Simu Liu-led installment.

For those too concerned about Avengers: Kang Dynasty, the film is still relatively far out on the Marvel slate, set for a theatrical release on May 1st, 2026. It would serve as Part One for back-to-back Avengers events, with Avengers: Secret Wars coming on May 7th, 2027, and will serve as the finale of Phase 6.

With the future of Jonathan Majors’ Kang and the entire MCU being rocky right now, it seems like Marvel and the filmmakers behind these blockbusters are taking a step back and figuring things out while rumours abound of a shift away from Kang. Marvel Studios has halted production on Daredevil: Born Again, bringing in new showrunners and directors for a “Day Zero” revamp, while the studio has also pushed back its entire slate, leaving only Deadpool 3 as the sole MCU movie of 2024.

The latest MCU release, The Marvels, is now playing in cinemas, having opened to a record-low weekend for the franchise.
