For the first time in its history, Walt Disney Pictures has crossed $5 billion in global box office receipts in a single year, thanks in no small part to its big three brands in Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm.
Topping Disney’s list of big earners this year are Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion), Inside Out ($855.4 million), Cinderella ($542.5 million) and Ant-Man ($519.1 million), while Star Wars: The Force Awakens is coming off the bank of the biggest worldwide opening of all time with $528.9 million by close of play on Sunday.
The highest-grossing studio this year in Universal, with hits such as Jurassic World, Furious 7 and Minions propelling it to $6.8 billion over the past twelve months. It will be interesting to see if The Force Awakens can push Disney into first place…
