Disney-Pixar officially announces Coco 2

March 23, 2025 by Gary Collinson

The Walt Disney Company chief Bob Iger has announced that development is underway on Coco 2, a follow-up to Disney-Pixar’s Oscar-winning 2017 film, which will reunite the creative team behind the original film including director Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3), co-director Adrian Molina and producer Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4).

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humour, heart and adventure,” said Iger, making the announcement during Disney’s annual investor meeting. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

The original Coco followed Miguel, a 12-year-old boy with ambitions of becoming a musician, who ventures into the Land of the Dead to unlock the real story behind his family history and its generations-old ban on music. The film won the Oscar for Best Animated Film, along with Best Original Song for ‘Remember Me’.

Plot details for Coco 2 are being kept under wraps at present, but the film joins two other sequels on Pixar’s upcoming slate, with Toy Story 5 set to release in June 20126 and Incredibles 3 also in development.
