Disney-Pixar’s Onward tracking $100 million global opening despite coronavirus fears

March 5, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Disney-Pixar’s Onward is set to make its global bow this week, and despite growing concern about the coronavirus (which has just led to the delay of the new James Bond film No Time To Die), it looks as though the animated adventure is on course for a solid opening.

As reported by Deadline, the film – which sees Marvel stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland leading its voice cast – is on course to pull in around $100 million from 48 markets this weekend, including a domestic start of $50 million, slightly up on tracking estimates of mid-$40 million.

Cinemas in China have been closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, but the Middle Kingdom is not traditionally a strong market for Pixar movies and is not expected to severely impact Onward’s overall takings. The film’s release in South Korea and Italy has also been pushed back to April, having originally been slated for this week.

Set in a suburban fantasy world, Disney-Pixar’s Onward introduces two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left in the world.

Onward features a voice cast that includes Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer.
