The Little Mermaid remake originally began production in 2020, however, as a result of the pandemic, the film was halted until it was confirmed back in April that filming would begin shooting on the Italian island of Sardinia over the summer, after a stint at London’s Pinewood Studios.

While the film is set to feature many of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s classic songs from the original 1989 film, Menken has previously revealed that the remake will feature “four new songs” in collaboration with Moana composer Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The Little Mermaid is being directed by Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) from a script by David Magee (Finding Neverland) and will star Halle Bailey (Grown-ish) as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King (Little Women) as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) as Ursula, Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) as Flounder, Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting) as Sebastian and Javier Bardem (Everybody Knows) as King Triton.
