Disney’s three Star Wars movies have passed the studio’s Lucasfilm purchase price at the worldwide box office

December 30, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Originally published December 30, 2017. Updated April 16, 2018.

In 2012, The Walt Disney Company paid $4.06 billion to acquire Lucasfilm from George Lucas, and it looks like that has proven to be a very shrewd investment, with the studio’s first three Star Wars movies – Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Last Jedi – having now surpassed that figure at the worldwide box office.

The Last Jedi has grossed $934.3 million since its release earlier this month (and is expected to hit $1 billion before the close of the year); add in Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $2.0682 billion and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s $1.0561 billion and we have a grand total of $4.0586 billion and counting.

The success of The Last Jedi has also pushed the Star Wars saga to a grand total of $8.6999 billion worldwide. Expect it to be pushing the $10 billion mark when Episode VIII and May’s Solo: A Star Wars Story both finish their run.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb) and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as DJ and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) as Vice Admiral Holdo.
