Domhnall Gleeson’s role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens ties him to major character?

February 6, 2015 by Luke Owen

Warning – there could be spoilers below…

It seems amazing in this day and age of the Internet that a film can keep so much secrecy, but J.J. Abrams has managed to do it with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That is, apart from a few bits that have slipped through here and there.

Today’s nugget comes from MakingStarWars who claim to have “trusted sources” who are telling them that Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) is set to play the son of Luke Skywalker. According to the site, Gleeson will be an Imperial who is tasked with sending Chrome Stormtroopers after John Boyega’s character.

So, he’s the son of Luke Skywalker but working for the baddies? Well, the site reckons that Gleeson is actually a double agent of sorts to disarm the galaxy of super weapons.

Here’s what the site writes:

“The implications of Gleeson’s actions are supposedly huge in the film. He began this mission before his father went missing. When he succeeds in ending the Intergalactic Cold War by stopping the weapons of galaxy wide destruction he doesn’t anticipate the immediate consequences. The cost? He opens up a new front and the war turns hot as there is nothing to keep the peace with mutually assured destruction no longer on the table. The real war then begins and the fight for the control of planets and territory begins, causing a conflict the storytellers hope will lead to countless Star Wars tales for years to come.”

What do we think?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for release on December 18th and also sees returning stars Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) joined by Adam Driver (Girls), Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year), Andy Serkis (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), John Boyega (Attack the Block) Daisy Ridley (Silent Witness), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Miltos Yerolemou (Game of Thrones), Max von Sydow (The Exorcist), Jessica Henwick (Spirit Warriors), Christina Chong (24: Live Another Day) and newcomers Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen.
