Donnie Darko director says James Cameron inspired him to develop a sequel

January 30, 2021 by Samuel Brace

Richard Kelly, the director of Donnie Darko, says his inspiration for writing a follow up was the encouragement of James Cameron.

When James Cameron tells you to do something, you do it, especially when it comes to filmmaking. The iconic director of Titanic, Terminator, Avatar and more, knows what he’s doing. Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly certainly holds Cameron’s opinion in high regard as it was his encouragement that caused Kelly to continue working on the Donnie Darko universe.

Earlier this week Kelly revealed a lot of work had been put into a Donnie Darko sequel and he also told The Playlist about Cameron’s influence: “I started explaining it all to him and he pointed at me and said, ‘You should keep working on that.’ It made me think there was really something big, something epic that could be done. So that’s what I’ve been focusing on.”

It’s exciting to think about what Kelly has planned for Donnie Darko in the future. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we learn some actual details.
