Don’t Worry About the Box Office Darling, as Olivia Wilde’s sophomore film set to exceed expectations

September 22, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Following months of tittle-tattle that have left us all feeling a little bit like Chris Pine at a Venice Film Festival Q&A, Don’t Worry Darling is finally revealing its secrets in cinemas around the world this weekend, and in a twist befitting of a film littered with them, Olivia Wilde’s sophomore feature is tipped to exceed expectations at the box-office.

Warner Bros. are playing it safe with their estimates, pegging the Florence Pugh film at $17M, which is probably in line with Don’t Worry Darling‘s lacklustre 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, that’s not taking into account the fact that there is a dearth of new films out at the moment, let alone ones which cater to the adult demographic, and Don’t Worry Darling is a mystery-box movie that viewers might want to unravel by themselves.

The biggest variable is the Harry Styles factor, which experts believe could bump the film’s weekend performance to somewhere between $20 million and $24 million, with some predicting it could go even higher.

Either way it should take the top spot from Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King [read our ★★★★ review here] which also performed well atop the box-office last weekend and will be looking to add a further double-digit amount to its $22 million total. As two films directed by women, with female driven narratives, both are cause for celebration.

From a woman king we move to the ‘King of the World’ with the re-release of James Cameron’s biggest film of all time Avatar. Yanked from Disney+ so that they could coin it in/you could prepare yourself for Avatar: The Way of Water (delete where applicable), Disney and 20th Century are expecting anywhere between $7 million and $10 million for audiences return to Pandora. Not bad for a film thirteen years old, with years of TV syndication, and a “Is it really that good?” reputation.
