Dunkirk becomes second highest grosser of 2017 at UK box office, beating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

August 16, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Dunkirk has sailed into second position at the UK box office for 2017, overcoming some serious competition on the way.

We reported earlier in the month that Dunkirk had out earned Spider-Man:  Homecoming, Wonder Woman, and Logan at the UK box office. But now it can add another impressive achievement to its name, having also beaten out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Dunkirk is now the second highest grossing film of the year in the UK, having earned a better than expected $58.1 million, which puts it comfortably ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a film that sits in fourth place with $53 million.

Dunkirk has also moved past Despicable Me 3’s now third place tally of $55 million.

Dunkirk dropped 43% this past weekend, but it was enough to top the box office charts for an impressive fourth weekend in a row. This is a feat that even films like Beauty and the Beast and Rogue One failed to achieve. In fact, the last film to pull it off was 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Dunkirk is now $32 million behind Beauty and the Beast which claims the top UK box office position with $90.4 million. Dunkirk is projected to earn around $64 million by the time it’s done, double its initial projections.

For some further context, director Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar managed $31 million in 2014.

Dunkirk currently has a global total of $364.9 million.

“Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.”

Dunkirk sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney and newcomer Fionn Whitehead.
