Emilia Clarke teases Han’s relationship with Qi’ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story

February 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is swapping the world of Westeros for the galaxy far, far away this year as she takes on the role of the mysterious Qi’ra in Disney and Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Unlike the likes of Han, Chewie and Lando, Qi’ra is a new addition to the Star Wars universe, and during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress has given us a little insight into the character and her relationship with Alden Ehrenreich’s smuggler and future hero of the Rebellion.

“They grew up as comrades, essentially,” said Clarke. “They grew up as pals, as partners in crime. There is obviously the romantic side of things. But they grew up together. So they were kids together. And the beautiful thing about this Han Solo story is it’s highlighting all of the most brilliant aspects of Han Solo the character and characterizing those aspects in characters that he meets on his journey to becoming who he is.”

Clarke also went on to discuss Qi’ra’s description as a “femme fatale,” adding that: “There is a thing throughout the relationship you just can’t put your finger on. And that’s Qi’ra. Every time you think you have got her number you realize you haven’t at all… She is a little bit of a tough one to get a hold of, really. There is this underlying joy in an origin story because you know where they end up. And Qi’ra is nowhere to be seen, so … something has happened! [Laughs] You know what I mean?”

Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Tien Hoang (Now You See Me 2) as Moloch’s henchman and Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
