Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have shot a secret new film alongside Poor Things

September 7, 2023 by EJ Moreno

It seems we’re getting a double dose of the dynamic duo of director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone, as alongside the upcoming shocking new film Poor Things, the pair have been cooking up another movie…which they’ve already shot secretly this past year.

Speaking with Cineuropa, Lanthimos confirmed this mysterious new project. The filmmaker, who previously worked with Stone on The Favorite, discussed shooting it in Greece with Stone and cinematographer Robbie Ryan.

Lanthimos describes the still-untitled film as “much simpler and very different in comparison to Poor Things because that story needed that particular style.”

As well as this new project, there’s also another film with Lanthimos and Stone, an upcoming anthology called AND. That film will co-star Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamoudou Athie. That was reportedly shot in New Orleans.

At the time of writing, there’s still no release date for AND or this new film. As for Poor Things, the stylish new film (currently sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes) is due out this winter.

From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Featuring in the cast of Poor Things are Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, and Christopher Abbott.

Poor Things will be released in the US on December 8th, 2023, and in the UK on January 12th, 2024.
