Everest struggles at the US box office with a $13 million opening weekend

September 28, 2015 by admin

After a stellar IMAX opening last week, it was expected that Universal’s Everest would go on to dominate the US box office this weekend. However, that didn’t quite go as planned.

Opening to just $13 million domestically, Everest only managed to take fourth place against Hotel Transylvania 2 ($47 million), The Intern ($18 million) and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials ($14 million). With a reported budget of $55 million, this is not a good opener for the disaster movie, even with its $7.5 million IMAX only weekend.

Next weekend sees the release of Ridley Scott’s The Martian, so it is unlikely that Everest will find its footing in its second week. Thankfully for Universal, they’ve have had major success elsewhere with Jurassic World, Furious 7, Minions and Straight Outta Compton.
