Exclusive Interview – Aisling Franciosi and Sam Claflin on The Nightingale, depicting colonial violence in film, and more

November 25, 2019 by Alex Moreland

Alex Moreland talks to Aisling Franciosi and Sam Claflin about The Nightingale, working with Jennifer Kent, and more…

The Nightingale is a film about violence – set in a British colony in Australia at the height of colonialism, it tells a story of traumas both political and personal. Jennifer Kent’s second feature film is unrelenting in approach and uncompromising in perspective: audiences walked out en masse at Sydney Film Festival, and it’s been a contentious piece ever since.

Aisling Franciosi and Sam Claflin recently sat down with Alex Moreland to discuss The Nightingale, working with Jennifer Kent, and how exactly they approached one of 2019’s most viscerally honest on-screen depictions of colonial violence.

In 19th century Australia, an Irish convict embarks on a mission of violent revenge when her family is attacked by a group of English soldiers.

The Nightingale is in cinemas from 29th November 2019.
