Exclusive Interview – The Good Liar director Bill Condon on nasty old people and Ian McKellen dropping C-bombs

November 5, 2019 by Tom Beasley

Tom Beasley has a chat with director Bill Condon about heist thriller The Good Liar, starring Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren…

It’s not often that cinemagoers get to see older people being genuinely horrible on the big screen. But that’s set to change with The Good Liar, in which Ian McKellen portrays a con artist attempting to fleece Helen Mirren’s wealthy widow out of her life savings. The director is Bill Condon, who has recently taken on Disney’s live-action world in Beauty and the Beast, as well as helming the final two chapters of the Twilight franchise.

Condon sat down recently for a chat with Flickering Myth about his continuing relationship with regular collaborator McKellen, as well as how far he pushed the movie’s violence and nastiness.

Career con artist Roy Courtnay (McKellen) can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish (Mirren) online. As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life.

The Good Liar is set for release on November 8th.
