With Marvel Inhumans set to debut in IMAX theaters and on ABC next month, Flickering Myth’s Thomas Harris caught up with Roel Reine, director of the first two episodes, to discuss the new series, as well as Anson Mount’s Black Bolt and Iwan Rheon’s Maximus.
“It’s a family drama, it’s kind of a Game of Thrones construction about these heavy themes between the characters and a lot of depth in the characters, but also it has the fun and the action and the cool stuff, and I think it has the right balance for a large audience,” said Reine.
Asked about the challenges of bringing a mute character such as Black Bolt to the screen, Reine responded that: “I think it was really complicated for Anson to find his place, because how do you play a character that cannot speak? You are a king, you have to rule a kingdom, you are a husband, a lover. How do you do these things without saying a word? And Anson found a really nice way into this character, and then me as a director, you’re then trying to help with the camera angles and the other actors involving with him to give him the right tone and the right rhythm and the moments to glow, even if he doesn’t speak.”
And as for Black Bolt’s brother, the villainous Maximus, Reine was full of praise for actor Iwan Rheon and what he brought to the table: “He’s a really good actor, a serious actor. What’s great about the character is that he doesn’t believe the class system of the Inhumans, he believes everyone is equal. And so in his struggle, being the lowest, as he’s human and he has no superpowers, it was a big struggle for him to fight and that made his character very depthful and I think he embraced that and really focussed on that… I think he’s one of the most fascinating characters of the series.”

Featuring in the cast of the series are Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Mike Moh as Triton, Sonya Balmores as Auran, Henry Ian Cusick as Dr. Evan Declan and Ellen Woglom and Chad James Buchanan as as-yet-unrevealed characters.
