F9 becomes first Hollywood movie to gross over $500 million since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

July 6, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

It looks like the box office is finally starting to show signs of recovery and a possible return to some kind of normality, with Universal Pictures’ F9: The Fast Saga taking its global haul beyond the $500 million mark following its global roll-out last month.

By close of play on Sunday, F9 had earned $123 million from its first two weeks of release in North America, with a further $374 million from international markets. Monday’s figures take it beyond $500 million, making it the first Hollywood movie to break the half billion dollar barrier since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

F9 has also surpassed Godzilla vs. Kong to become the highest-grossing Hollywood movie of 2021 to date; however, it still trails the Chinese features Hi, Mom and Detective Chinatown 3, which have grossed $848 million and $703 million worldwide respectively.

Will the latest chapter of the Fast & Furious franchise have enough gas in the tank to surpass Hi, Mom (and prevent a non-U.S. movie from becoming the highest-grossing of the year for only the second time after last year’s Demon Slayer: Mugen Train)? Only time will tell, although analysts are predicting that the film will end up with a similar total of 2019’s spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which earned $759 million worldwide.

Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, the upcoming The Suicide Squad).

The action hurtles around the globe—from London to Tokyo, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tbilisi. Along the way, old friends will be resurrected, old foes will return, history will be rewritten, and the true meaning of family will be tested like never before.

Fast & Furious 9 sees Justin Lin directing a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, John Cena, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron.
