While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was topping the charts around the globe, Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them passed another box office milestone this weekend as it crossed the $700 million mark worldwide.
Fantastic Beasts has grossed $207.7 million domestically and now has a total of $717.5 million worldwide. That’s below the lowest-grossing instalment of the Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ($796.7 million), but considering the Boy Wizard is absent from the film (and the title), it’s still an impressive haul, and bodes well for the future of the planned five-film franchise.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
