Despite being overshadowed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for the last few weeks of the year, Warner Bros. Harry Potter spinoff prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has managed to scrape together another box office milestone with the film hitting $800 million worldwide.
Fantastic Beasts has grossed $229.9 million domestically, but performed much better in the international markets, where it has added a further $570.1 million. The $800 million figure also means its no longer the lowest-grossing instalment of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World franchise, having surpassed the $769.7 million haul of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
