Fede Álvarez wants to “go into uncharted waters” with Alien: Romulus sequel

January 16, 2025 by Ricky Church

Last summer Fede Álvarez’s prequel Alien: Romulus became a hit for the long-running Alien franchise, focusing on a new batch of characters as they have their own horrifying encounter with the Xenomorphs. With a sequel now in the early stages of development, Álvarez has spoken on its potential and said he’d like to “go into uncharted waters” for the audience and franchise.

In an interview with Empire, Álvarez revealed he and his Alien: Romulus co-writer Rodo Sayagues are currently working on the story. “We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus] and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”

He also spoke on how audiences connected with the new characters in Romulus and the potential in following its survivors on another harrowing journey. “I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before.”

Álvarez also wanted to assure Alien fans that they wouldn’t make a sequel just for the sake of making a sequel since Romulus proved to be such a huge hit, but that he would only make it if they could craft a good enough story to honour both the franchise and its fans.

“The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel,” he said. “But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that’s worthy of the title.”
