First look at Florence Pugh in Netflix’s psychological drama The Wonder

August 12, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Florence Pugh clearly learned nothing from her Midsommar jaunt, because she has once again found herself slap-bang in the heart of another small community with strange goings on for Sebastián Lelio’s The Wonder, and Netflix has just released this first still as filming gets underway in Ireland.

An adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel, The Wonder is set in the Irish Midlands, 1859 and follows an English nurse, Lib Wright (Pugh), who is summoned to a tiny village to observe what some are claiming as a medical anomaly or a miracle – a girl said to have survived without food for months. Tourists have flocked to the cabin of eleven-year-old and a journalist has come down to cover the sensation. The Wonder is a tale of two strangers who transform each other’s lives, a psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.

Joining Pugh is an impressive cast featuring Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Elaine Cassidy, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, Dermot Crowley, Brían F. O’Byrne and David Wilmot.

The Wonder is set for release sometime in 2022.
