October 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With production now underway, HBO and Sky have unveiled a first look image of Helen Mirren in the title role in Catherine the Great, a four-part miniseries which is set to explore the latter part of Catherine’s reign as she builds Russia into one of the great powers of Europe.

Catherine the Great has been written by Nigel Williams, who penned the script for 2005’s Golden Globe-winning Elizabeth I starring Mirren, and also features a cast that includes Jason Clarke (First Man), Joseph Quinn (Game of Thrones), Gina McKee (Notting Hill), Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful), Richard Roxburgh (Rake), Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), Sam Palladio (Nashville), Clive Russell (Game of Thrones), Lucas Englander (Genius), Antonia Clarke (Les Miserables), Paul Ritter (Cold Feet), Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones), Thomas Doherty (Descendants 2), Raphael Acloque (Allied), James Northcoate (The Imitation Game) and Andrew Rothney (The Huntsman: Winter’s War).

Catherine the Great is scheduled to air in 2019.
