Five TV Shows and Films That Need Virtual Reality Spin Offs

June 11, 2017 by Neil Calloway

Neil Calloway imagines some projects that you should be able to enjoy in Virtual Reality…

This week’s news that Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan wants to “do something” involving the show and Virtual Reality may seem odd, but in a world where we want increasing interactivity, it’s not too surprising that familiar properties will want to use VR.

Here are five TV shows and Films that would be brilliant to experience in Virtual Reality…

Star Wars. Why bother walking around Albuquerque in Virtual Breaking Bad when you can visit the Mos Eisley Cantina or the Death Star while wearing a VR headset? If the forthcoming Star Wars Land at Disney doesn’t contain a VR playground then its creators are missing a trick. As long as they make sure Han shoots first.

Alien. Staying on a science fiction theme, who wouldn’t want to join the crew of the Nostromo or the Colonial Marines on a bug hunt? Stop your grinnin’ and drop your linen.

House of Cards. Who wouldn’t want to immerse themselves in Frank Underwood’s White House. His fourth wall breaking asides would be made to you and you alone. If politics isn’t your thing you can still get to know the thrill of throwing someone under a subway train.

Top Gun. Forget the inevitably disappointing sequel that we’ve been promised, why not strap on a headset and relive the Cold War going hot in an F-14? If flying isn’t your thing, then you can always play beach volleyball to a Kenny Loggins soundtrack.

Twin Peaks. Of course, not many people would like to spend time investigating murder and incest, but who doesn’t want to enjoy some damn fine coffee and cherry pie among the Douglas firs?

In a week where it was revealed that shares in IMAX have dropped by more than a quarter, it’s obvious that viewers want more than passively watching the action unfold on a giant screen. A VR Breaking Bad might not be the answer, but the it’s good to see producers are open to the idea of letting people explore the worlds they created.
