This Saturday – 6th May 2017 – marks one of the greatest days for any comic book reader, for it is “Free Comic Book Day” – a day in which comic book stores across the globe quite literally will be handing over some rather splendid and totally free: comic books to everybody with good manners.
One of these titles is Star Trek: TNG – Mirror Broken, which sees the return of Scott & David Tipton on writing duties along with the excellent artist that is J.K. Woodward, and as the title reveals this Next Gen Universe is not the Prime Directive quoting variety. Instead we find ourselves on board the I.S.S. Stargazer, following a somewhat more confident Reg Barclay, one of the few remaining craft of the Terran Empire. Sat in the I.S.S. Stargazer Captain’s Chair is Picard and he is shadowed at all-times by his Mind-Witch Deanna Troi and his stoic Science Officer Lt. Commander Data.
The Mirror Broken is a perfect twenty-page introduction to the upcoming mini-series of the same name, soon to be released by IDW Publishing. Along with an excellent opener from the Tipton Brothers and J.K. Woodward’s utterly fantastic artwork, we are also treated to a brief “Dark Reflections: Designing Mirror Broken” in which Scott, David and J.K. highlight alternative designs for characters and we get a look at a propaganda poster too.
Finally this free Trek comic closes with three extremely slim glimpses of Star Trek: Boldly Go, Star Trek/Green Lantern: Stranger Worlds and Star Trek: Waypoint; the latter two comic book series are coming to a close shortly but all are worth taking a look at.
Free Comic Book Day is an excellent event and one you really shouldn’t miss, for let’s face it who doesn’t like free things…especially comic books!?
