Gal Gadot, the star of Wonder Woman 1984, has explained why the film isn’t really a sequel to Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman 1984 is the next film in the DCEU Wonder Woman franchise and follows up 2017’s Wonder Woman. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are returning for the film but Gadot doesn’t consider the film to be an actual sequel.
Speaking to Total Film (via GamesRadar) she explained that 1984 is too different from the original to be a sequel:
“We don’t pick up the story where we left it last, because it was 66 years ago. So she’s been living for over six decades by herself, in man’s world, serving mankind and doing good. And this story is a story of its own. I mean, the only thing that we share in both stories is probably, you know, the fact that it’s Diana Prince and also Steve Trevor. But other than that, it’s a whole new world, and the era is different, and Diana is different, and the story is new.”
Co-star Kristen Wiig agreed with Gadot in the same interview, with the two of them saying that Wonder Woman 1984 is totally of its own compared to the first one.

Hopefully, fans respond positively to the big changes and the film retains enough of what fans liked about the first one to make it a success.
