Game of Thrones creators leave HBO for $200 million Netflix film and TV deal

August 8, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Emmy Award-winning Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are leaving their home of HBO for a new production home. According to Deadline, Benioff & Weiss have signed an exclusive $200 million deal with Netflix to write, produce and direct new TV series and films.

“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”

“We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber,” David Benioff & Dan Weiss added. “We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them.”

The overall deal was occurring at a time when the Game of Thrones final season was wrapping up production. The duo during this time had met with Netflix, HBO/WarnerMedia, Disney, Comcast, Apple, and Amazon. However, Deadline reported the choices were narrowed down to Netflix, Amazon, and Disney late last month.

However, despite this deal with Netflix, Benioff and Weiss are still creating their Star Wars trilogy that has been in development for over a year. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed this Star Wars film will be the next instalment to be released after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with a current release date of 16th December 2022.
