Game of Thrones director reveals why Jon didn’t properly say goodbye to Ghost

May 8, 2019 by Samuel Brace

David Nutter, director of the latest episode of Game of Thrones, has revealed the reason why Jon didn’t go over and pet Ghost when saying his goodbyes.

As ever, the latest episode of Game of Thrones provided numerous talking points and fascinating moments. One scene, however, has caused a few fans to be upset with Jon, who didn’t go over to pet his beloved wolf Ghost when saying his goodbyes.

Why was this? Well, according to episode director David Nutter, this was because Ghost is a difficult CGI creation and they didn’t think they could pull it off without detracting from the scene. Speaking to Huffington Post, Nutter said:

“Since the direwolves are kind of CG creations, we felt it best to keep it as simple as possible. And I think that it played out much more powerfully that way.”

Real wolves are used to create direwolves on the show but they have to be scaled up to capture the size and this causes complications when interacting with people. As a result, Nutter said: “Keeping Ghost off to the side, I thought that played out better. Then he just walks off by himself, he turns to Ghost and has this moment with Ghost that I thought was very, very powerful.”

Of course, there are still two episodes left of the show so perhaps the two haven’t seen the last of each other. We will have to wait and see what the future holds for Jon and Ghost.

The final season of Game of Thrones features a cast that includes Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Liam Cunningham, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jacob Anderson, Rory McCann, Gwendoline Christie, Pilou Asbaek, Carice Van Houten, Iain Glen, Jerome Flynn, Alfie Allen, Conleth Hill, John Bradley and Vladimir Furdik.
