Gareth Edwards would like to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars spinoff movie

December 7, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It looks like we can add Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards to the list of fans who’d like to see Ewan McGregor reprising the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Star Wars Anthology movie, with the filmmaker sharing his excitement over the prospect during an interview with The Playlist.

“I would love to see anything with Obi-Wan Kenobi in it. Someone did a really cool illustration online of a half Ewan McGregor, half Alec Guiness; you couldn’t tell the difference. It was like the wilderness years. I just saw that image and I thought, I would love to… that would be interesting. Sort of a samurai movie or something a little bit lonely. Like a very simple one, not an epic battle. Something more lonely and maybe an incident nearly got to a young Luke Skywalker, or who knows…”

It’s long been speculated that Lucasfilm is planning an Obi-Wan movie (or three), and McGregor has stated on several occasions that he’d been keen to reprise the role, having briefly supplied some voice work for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But, if it did become a reality, would Edwards be keen to direct it, or any other Star Wars movie for that matter?

“No,” he responded. “I feel like I’ve won the lottery and as a lottery winner it would be unfair to spend all my money on lottery tickets, so I have to walk away.”

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 15th in the UK and December 16th in the States, with a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), James Earl Jones (Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope), Valene Kane (The Fall), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager), Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode IV – Return of the Jedi) and Jonathan Aris (Sherlock).
